Hey! Hello! Hi there! This is Paula from Her Book Thoughts! and I just hacked Dre’s Blog! WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Paula, what have you done? Did you change my password, or something? – Dre
Okay. Okay. I’m kidding! Dre actually asked me to do a guest post. Whether she’s drunk at that time or not, I ACCEPTED THE OPPORTUNITY!
SO. Let’s talk about Book Covers, and let’s be honest. I know, I know. It’s all been discussed, argued and thrashed about before, but… I WASN’T THERE AT THAT CONVERSATION. So let’s all talk about it over again! Sorry for being bossy, I wasn’t planning on going Mr. Grey on all of you. Anyway, there are some questions that I want you guys to answer because I am genuinely curious about your take on this matter.
If Book Covers were guys, I’m pretty sure we broke up a long time ago. Because I’ve been lied to… cheated.. and led on… They can be jerks sometimes. I know we’ve all heard the proverb “don’t judge a book by its cover,” meaning that we shouldn’t let first appearances become our judgment. The saying, of course, applies to much more than just books, but as this is a blog that focuses only on books, I’m taking issue with the literal meaning of the old adage. Listen, here’s the Ugly Truth: PEOPLE JUDGE BOOK BY ITS COVER. (Okay, so maybe the truth is not that ugly but you get my point) Whether you admit it or not, we all judge. I personally think that it’s human nature. Snap judgments are inevitable. So yeah, we CAN and we are capable of judging a book by its cover. Unconsciously, or not. Does that make us mean, ruthless people? Of course not! We’re being practical! and smart!
By the way, if you think this post will be gif-less…
Okay, now that it is clear that I’ll be bombarding you with gif’s, let’s get into the question that is so obvious I don’t even know why I have to write it. SHOULD WE JUDGE A BOOK BY its COVER?
Because we’re all being honest, I’ll be the first one to say that I’m really having a hard time answering this question. Yep, I am torn. There has been instances where I got saved because of my judgement but there’s also an occasion when I feel like, I THINK I’M MISSING OUT. So to make it easy, for myself, I’ll share my reasons on why I WANT TO SAY:
YES, WE SHOULD JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER because: As much as I want to read ALL of the books I want to read, there’s this thing called real life. So, yeah, TIME IS IMPORTANT. And when I have to make a fast or snap decision on what to read, I look at the cover to help me decide.
And I don’t know if I’m the only who have encountered this, but some books nowadays doesn’t have Blurbs anymore! I mean, yeah, thank you The New York Times or Random Author for your opinion of the book BUT I ACTUALLY WANNA KNOW WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT. So what happens? I look at the cover again for help.
And sadly, I don’t have a cursed prince admiring me and trying to get my attention by buying all the books that I want. The money is mine. And my money doesn’t grow on trees. So if I’m in a bookstore with a very tight budget, what do I do? I look at the cover. See? Pretty reasonable, right?
Now that the half of my brain has represented itself, here’s the other side. I want to say:
NO, WE SHOULD NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER because: No matter what the cover looks like, what’s inside is what matters most. Okay, so this is such a lame reason. But it’s true! I mean, looks can be deceiving right? And to be honest, I actually had some experiences where I was so thankful to myself for not judging (I can’t remember it perfectly, but i’m pretty sure that at those experiences, I had money.)
Anyway, let’s wrap this up. I think it’s obvious where I stand. If you’re going to ask me right now and you want a straight answer, SHOULD WE JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER? Yes, I think we should. Book covers represent what can we expect from the story. So while you won’t get the full story, a lot can be taken from a book’s cover. And besides if an author feels that their book is worth to read, they ought to put in a little bit more time to make their covers appealing to a potential reader.. AM I RIGHT?
So now that my fabulous time here is almost up, I want to share some of my personal book cover lists! I’ll try to keep it fun so that you won’t get more bored as much you are now.
BOOK COVERS THAT MADE ME QUESTION MY LIFE CHOICES BY READING IT: a.k.a WHYYYY
—> DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT: JUST LISTEN TO IT, OKAY? The book is already warning you.. JUST. LISTEN.
—> STUPID GIRL: Let’s just say that the girl is not the only one stupid. *smh*
—>THE MUSEUM OF INTANGIBLE THINGS: …………I’m sorry, I think I dozed off a little.
—>SHATTER ME: “He was wrong. He was SO wrong. He was more wrong than an upside-down rainbow”
—>BEAUTIFUL DISASTER: I DID READ THIS.
–> THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER: I don’t even remember anything.
Ad now, BOOK COVERS THAT NEEDS MORE WORK:
—> JELLICOE ROAD: I keep passing this one because I didn’t really like the cover. It looks like a children’s coloring book. The story is incredible, by the way! I loveeed it.
—> OBSIDIAN: I don’t like these two. They look creepy! Not my Daemon and Katy! I’d rather think of the characters’ features myself.
—> TORN AWAY: The story makes me want to weep and just die. The book cover makes me yawn. And am I the only who sees this girl in every YA contemporary nowadays?! If it isn’t her back, it’s her face with her eyes closed. Seriously, this girl needs to be replaced.
—> A DIFFRENT BLUE: Such a shame, this book is just plain stunning! The story is still inside me. I think we need, A DIFFERENT.. cover. (I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BTW)
—> ANGELFALL: I’M SORRY, BUT I DON’T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND. This book is nothing but Epic. It’s not that I don’t like the cover, It just doesn’t stands out. AND IT SHOULD.
—> CLAN: I hope you add this on your TBR. The plot is really unique, not like the cover!
As much as I want to drown you more with my lists, I am still curious about what you think. Do you think we should judge a book by it’s cover? No? Yes? Don’t have a straight answer? I would like to hear it! smile
